Fake Tweetz

Originally I was planning on doing the “Beautiful Social” final…however in my procrastination I spent 4 hours online “window shopping”.  I came up with the idea to turn this into my final project.

I came up with the twitter handle “SH0PAH0LIK”, I based on the “girly” side of my personality and just had fun with it.  I tweeted a lot of links to cute clothes for all types of budgets, I also interacted with fashion blogs, and tweeted style/fashion articles.  This is a quick snap shot of my twitter:

I tweeted things such as Kleinfeld’s knock-off of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress that will be available this summer.  I also tried to start some conversations such as “summer is almost here- where’s your favorite summer shop spot?” and “What’s your take on maxi skirts- love ’em or hate ’em?”

I wish that I had went with this idea earlier because I would have loved to see what could really happen and how far it could go!  I started this twitter about 24 hours ago…

Last night when I went to bed I only had 11 followers….but I continued to tweet and engage my audience.  For the duration of this endeavor- I’ve tweeted 30 times and have about 30 followers.  This really SHOCKED me – my followers t.r.i.p.l.e.d. over night.  I can’t imagine what would have happened in the long run!

I think I may keep up with this twitter…not AS intense…(a.k.a. I won’t tweet EVERY hour) but I think it will be fun to keep up with it a little bit!!  Just to keep the experiment going!  Anyway if you want to check it out – @SH0PAH0LIK

Other the past few weeks our Communications Ethics class has heard a variety of student’s TED talks.  I really enjoyed how diverse the talks were- students discussed everything from polar bears to school politics.

A few of the talks were on similar subjects such as orphans, dogs, and behavioral changes do to the internet.

Alex’s talk on internet meme’s was particularly interesting I like how he used a very personal tone.  SPeaking of personal tones, Kaliope’s talk was AWESOME!  Although she didn’t rehearse her talk it came out great!! She was very personable and had a great topic.

Those were just a few highlights of the talented TED talks at SJU…

Trending now: Brigid Slattery gives a talk about the revolution social media has led to in the “news” industry.  Listen as Brigid explains how this wide-spread uncontrolled forum has changed the way we hear about the news.   The rise of consumer-driven content has gotten rid of the gate keepers; letting you decide what is “newsworthy”.

Okay so I already re-drafted this rough draft…I took out the “philly” intro and changed the music during the interview.  It was a classical violin which sounded too sad, almost mockingly sad.  Now it’s a more soothing and calm classical mix.  The quality of the video was compromised and some of the transitions were thrown off when it was uploaded to YouTube so don’t hold that against me!

We are in a world where media is literally at our fingertips 24/7.  As I am writing this I am sitting on my couch on my laptop, while the TV is on in the background, and texting my friends from my blackberry.  In the words of my mother, “our generation is always ON”.  I have always been a multi-tasker and these increases in technology have allowed almost everyone to become a muli-tasker.

This look into my media consumption showed me not only the consumption patterns but the vast amount of time that I spend on these sites, devices, shows.  Going back to what my mom said, I am “always on” I am always on the computer while checking my phone, or looking online while watching TV, and most of all…doing all three.  I’ve caught myself several times doing all three throughout the week.

One of the companies I have been looking at in my job search is Carat.  Carat is a market-leader in communications specializing in digital media.  Carat produced the chart above which illustrates media consumption based on the average hours per week further broken down by the medium used.

From this observation I also learned about my consumption habits.  I always pride myself on not being “girly” I like to watch comedy shows…not Real Housewives of Orange County…or anything on E! for that matter.  But looking at my media consumption pattern I saw that all I did was check my mail and look at online shopping sites and I watched THE GIRLIEST shows!  I thought this was a very interesting observation!

Unethical Superbowl ads?

The CEO of Groupon, Andrew Mason, was blown away by the how his new ad campaign was taken by viewers during the Superbowl this past weekend. The 30 second spot featuring actor, Timothy Hutton, started off with a somber tone addressing the hardships of the dying culture of Tibet. The tone suddenly changes as Timothy says, “but they still whip up an amazing fish curry. And since 200 of us bought on Groupon.com, we’re getting $30 worth of Tibetan food for just $15.”

As a naive consumer, I was shocked just like the rest of America.  It was not until after Groupon came out to defend their commercials that I understood their actions.  With further reading I found that Groupon is rooted in helping activists raise money for worthy causes…one of these causes being The Tibet Fund, as well as Greenpeace and The Rainforest Action Network (RAN).  

Groupon launched its donations page around 1pm on Sunday rallying for these 3 causes and promises to match each donation.  a Groupon spokesperson, “It has always been the foundation of the campaign. A  spokesperson for Groupon was quoted saying, “We would never have run the ads without these organizations’ support and a way for our subscribers to contribute to their causes.”

Here are the other two commercials aired during the superbowl…what do you think?  Ethical?

Although it is not the most reliable source, Wikipedia reports “global ethics” in the words of Dr. Hans Küng as…

“an interfaith declaration, which draws on many of the world’s religious and spiritual traditions, the declaration identifies four essential affirmations as shared principles essential to a global ethic.

  1. Commitment to a culture of non-violence and respect for life
  2. Commitment to a culture of solidarity and a just economic order
  3. Commitment to a culture of tolerance and a life of truthfulness
  4. Commitment to a culture of equal rights and partnership between men and women

This Declaration established a common ground for people of faith to agree and to cooperate for the good of all.”

 

Gordon Brown discussed the idea of how we can use social media to address certain global ethics.  Brown brought up the notion that we can use the widely available communication platforms to help the world during crisis in real-time.  This was evident in the Haiti incident, when the earthquake hit Haiti earlier this year the various forms of instant communication were more evident than ever.   Concerned citizens were urged to text in to donate money to relief efforts in Haiti.

 

I know that we could use these forms of instant communication to better the world.  This interconnected-ness gives way to an extreme form of globalization and we can use this to leverage our resources to help the greater good.

The talks that were given in class these past few weeks have been very moving!

I found it cool that almost all of the talks referenced social media, it’s such a huge part of our life now!  I like that each person approached it in a different way.

Like Dave who tied it to companies using social media for marketing purposes. I found this very true and have noticed this myself, as a marketing major, I hate when I see a commercial and at the end it mentions where to find them on facebook/twitter.  I know it’s a popular form of media right now… but sometimes it doesn’t fit the brand.

Steve’s TED talk was so cute! I love the pictures and how he used a “love story” to show how the way we communicate has drastically changed.

Danielle’s talk about people’s facebook statuses was really funny!! I really enjoyed that one!  It’s so true! We don’t realize that what’s on the internet is PERMANENT and people who don’t really know us perceive us in terms of what they see on facebook.  For example, when I went to school I had all of these crazy statuses and pictures of me partying…and when I returned home someone at the restaurant I work in said something to me along the lines of “college has made you a party girl”…and it really made me think about what I do online.  Also, I am “friends” with a lot of my bosses and co-workers so I have stopped using inappropriate language and putting up immature pictures….or maybe I just grew up a little bit…haha

All in all it has been so amazing to hear everyone’s different views on different topics in the communications field.  Good job everyone!
